Field Record No. 001 — Eastern Black Rhinoceros
Honoring a Legend. Preserving a Legacy.
01 — The Lore
He was one of fewer than 6,500 of his kind left on Earth.
Jabari was an eastern black rhinoceros — a critically endangered species hunted to the edge of existence. Born in 2013, he arrived at Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas in May 2016 as part of the AZA Species Survival Plan, a program built to keep his species alive.
Keepers called him a gentle giant. He had a legendary appetite for melons and pumpkins, a voice everyone at the zoo knew, and a signature move: when the excitement hit, Jabari hopped. A two-ton rhino, bouncing around his habitat like it was nothing.
He did his part for his species too. Paired with the female rhino Johari, he fathered a son — Ayubu, born in January 2021. A rare win for a species that can't afford losses.
On the night of July 10, 2025, storms rolled over Kansas and the rhinos were kept indoors, in separate quarters. Sometime in the dark, a gate between two bulls gave way. On the morning of Friday, July 11, keepers found Jabari at rest in the rhino barn. The necropsy confirmed it: trauma, nothing else. No sickness. No weakness. He went out the way rhinos have settled things for fifty million years.
The legend ended that morning. The legacy is ours to carry.
An eastern black rhino enters a world with fewer than 6,500 of his kind remaining.
Joins Lee Richardson Zoo in May under the AZA Species Survival Plan for his species.
Jabari and Johari welcome Ayubu in January — new blood for a critically endangered line.
Found at rest in the rhino barn after a storm-night encounter. The legend becomes legacy.
Remembered for
Two tons of critically endangered muscle, and a favorite of every keeper and guest who met him.
His one true weakness. If it was orange or round, it didn't survive the encounter.
Known across the zoo for his vocalizations — you heard Jabari before you saw him.
When excitement struck, he bounced around his habitat. Physics objected. Jabari didn't care.
< 6,500 eastern black rhinos remain in the wild
Poaching nearly erased them. Every Jabari matters. Consider supporting real rhino conservation — the memes are free, the species isn't.
